According to media reports, President Donald Trump is planning to announce the relocation of the US Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama.

The planned September 2nd announcement will reverse President Joe Biden’s decision to move President Trump’s 2021 decision to Alabama. Biden has chosen to maintain the military’s latest combatant command in Colorado, which has been a temporary headquarters since the military space program was established in 2019.

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville and other state leaders were pushing Alabama to become an Invisible Space Command and fighting the Biden administration.

A report released by the Government’s Office of Accountability in June 2022 found “priority locations” across five locations – Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, an Alabama site. However, Biden chose in 2023 to maintain the Colorado Space Command. Supporters said it was perfect for military preparation.

“The determinant of President Biden to decide to maintain the Space Command in Colorado Springs was pure and simple operational possibilities,” said John Kirby, former National Security Council coordinator of strategic communications.

However, Tuberville and others continued to request the relocation. The senator is a close Trump ally, and Alabama is the state’s Trump, earning 30% points. He lost 11 points to Colorado.

Trump has often linked federal funding decisions to politics. The president previously proposed blocking the move to set up the FBI’s headquarters in Maryland, calling it a “liberal nation,” and linking California disaster aid to state policy decisions.

According to Congressional records, about 1,700 people work on Space Command.

Huntsville, home to NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and a leading hub for defense contractors such as L3Harris and Lockheed Martin, has long lobbyed the Space Command headquarters.
