The Constitution limits presidential terms to two terms, but President Trump has toyed with the idea of a third term, making headlines at public events.
Despite constitutional restrictions, Trump has not ruled out a third term.
When asked if he would consider running for a third presidential term in 2028, Donald Trump said: “I would love to.”
Speculation that President Donald Trump might run again in 2028 includes a scenario in which he joins the Republican Party as a running mate, but Trump has dismissed that idea as “too cute.”
Trump said he would be “allowed” to run for vice president but would not do so.
“I wouldn’t do that. I think it’s too cute,” President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on October 27 while traveling overseas. “Well, I’ll rule that out because it’s too cute. I don’t think people will like it. It’s too cute. It’s not. That’s not right.”

On October 27, Trump said of the prospect of running for office again: “I would love to. I have the best numbers ever.”
Asked by reporters whether he would rule out the possibility of a 2028 bid, President Trump said, “I wouldn’t rule it out? You’d have to tell me that.”
Trump ally Steve Bannon continued to tout the Trump 2028 theory in a recent interview. Bannon served as White House chief strategist during the Trump administration and currently hosts the influential MAGA podcast.
“Trump is going to be president in 2028, and people should adjust to that,” Bannon told The Economist on October 23.
Among the ideas being floated is that Trump would be elected vice president and then the president would resign. Bannon said there are “a variety of options” when it comes to keeping Trump in the White House.
“We will reveal what our plans are at the appropriate time,” Bannon said. “But we have a plan.”
Trump refused to rule out a presidential run, but continued to name Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential 2028 candidates.
The president said both Mr. Rubio and Mr. Vance are “fantastic,” adding: “I don’t know if anyone is going to stand up to these two. If they form a group, I think it’s unstoppable.”
