The Justice Department chief executive reportedly directed several federal prosecutors to investigate the open society foundation network of billionaire liberal donor George Soros, weeks after President Donald Trump posted on social media that he should be criminally charged with social media.

According to reports from The New York Times and ABC News, high-ranking Justice Department official Akash Singh has issued an order in letter to at least a handful of US law firms, including offices in New York and California. The New York Times said they obtained copies of the letter, but ABC News cited multiple anonymous sources who confirmed the letter’s contents.

The letter reportedly listed a variety of potential accusations that prosecutors should consider, including providing material support for terrorism, committing arson and assaulting.

“The Foundation of Open Society clearly condemns terrorism and does not fund terrorism,” the grant-grant network said in a statement. “Our activities are peaceful and legal, and our grantors are expected to comply with human rights principles and to comply with the law.”

The network’s work in the United States aims to strengthen democracy and support constitutional freedom, according to the statement.

The network called “the politically motivated attack on civil society intended to silence the administration’s initial right to freedom of speech and weaken it.”

The Department of Justice did not immediately respond to USA Today’s request for comment. Divisional spokesman Chad Gilmartin defended the move to the New York Times.

“This DOJ, together with our hardworking and dedicated US lawyers, will always prioritize public safety and investigate organizations that conspire to commit violence and other violations of federal law,” said Gilmartin, according to a Times report.

The move is that Soros and one of his sons “should be charged with Rico” after Trump posted on Truth Social on August 27th. Trump claimed the pair supported the violent protest.

He didn’t explain what he was referring to or how they were said to have broken the law.

Trump’s call for criminal charges coincided with the threat he made to indict his rival while on the campaign trail in 2024.

For example, the president shared a meme on social media about a year ago when he read “Unselect J6 Committee,” “Inciting,” “Inciting,” and “Inciting,” in connection with a committee that investigated the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.
