Director Steven Spielberg is back with a new kind of close encounter.

The first trailer for the legendary director’s next film, “Disclosure Day,” which did not have an official title until now, has been released along with a mysterious video.

A first look released on Tuesday, December 16th, appears to indicate that the film’s plot remains vague, but that the existence of some kind of extraterrestrial lifeform is revealed to the world.

The trailer begins with the question, “If you knew we weren’t alone, if someone showed you and proved it, would you be scared?” Emily Blunt is then shown giving the weather forecast on TV, before stammering and starting to make weird alien-like clicking noises.

In the video, Josh O’Connor’s character declares that “people have a right to know the truth” and plans for “full disclosure to the whole world at once.” He is then shown standing in what appears to be a crop circle.

No synopsis for “Disclosure Day” has been released, with the studio only describing it as a “new original event film.” The genre is “Thriller”.

Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson also star in Disclosure Day, which marks Spielberg’s first directorial effort since his Oscar-nominated 2022 semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans.

The trailer and title reveal provided much-needed insight into what Spielberg has created after months of speculation about the film. All that was known so far was that the film was Spielberg’s return to science fiction and reportedly had something to do with UFOs.

Speculation intensified when billboards for the film recently started appearing, showing a close-up of an eye with cryptic text that reads “All will be revealed.” There was no title on the billboard, only Spielberg’s name and release date revealing the content of the ad.

But for Spielberg, who helped birth the genre in 1975 with Jaws and went on to perfect it with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T., Disclosure Day feels like a return to crowd-pleasing summer blockbusters. In recent years, Spielberg has generally focused more on award-season adult dramas like “Bridge of Spies” and “The Post,” but he returned to science fiction with the 2018 blockbuster “Ready Player One.”

The film is also clearly a return to aliens, a theme familiar to Spielberg. It’s a theme he previously explored in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Extraterrestrial, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Spielberg’s latest film, The Fabelmans, tells the story of an aspiring filmmaker who discovers a shocking family secret. The film, based largely on Spielberg’s own life, was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

“Disclosure Day” release date

“Disclosure Day” is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 12, 2026, at the height of the summer movie season.
