Delta said in a statement sent to USA Today to USA Today that the bird struck one of the two engines of the aircraft shortly after it left the airport at about 11:27am on Saturday, September 13th. The plane returned to Miami Airport shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft was evaluated and the flight was scheduled to land in Boston two hours late.
No injuries have been reported from the strike.
Delta said he apologised for the inconvenience the incident may have caused.
How common is bird strike?
Bird strikes are very common in aviation.
In 2024, 22,372 wildlife attacks were reported, up 14% compared to 2023.
Perhaps the most famous incident of bird strikes took place on January 15, 2009, when a 1549 US flight hit a flock of geese just after it took off from Lagardia Airport. The strike caused both engines to fail, prompting Captain Chesley to act quickly to land the plane on the Hudson River.
At the time, authorities considered it to be the most successful commercial water in history, as all 155 people on board survived.
Sullenberger has been praised worldwide following the incident.
The incident was often referred to as “The Hudson Miracle” and was the subject of a 2016 film starring Tom Hanks, known as “Sally.”
