NFL Overreaction Week 7
USA TODAY’s Prince Grimes breaks down the best games of Week 7 in the NFL.
take sports seriously
- Perhaps it’s foolish to read too much into one Sunday, but the apparent issues with the Eagles and Chiefs don’t seem to matter as much anymore.
- On Sunday, two prominent coaches gave back to their former teams.
- Are Patriots fans forgetting about Tom Brady because of Drake Maye? Probably not, but…
32 things we learned from Week 7 of the 2025 NFL season:
0. The New York Jets still have a few wins left, but another pitiful offensive performance against the Carolina Panthers dropped them to 0-7.
0. Apparently, the number of QB1s NYJ currently has has also increased after Justin Fields was traded for Tyrod Taylor on Sunday. Coach Aaron Glenn has not committed to starting him in Week 8.
1. Could the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles become the first teams in NFL history to meet three times in the Super Bowl in four seasons? Yes, the answer is yes. As of October 19, 2025, that possibility is definitely within the realm of possibility. But on Sunday afternoon, the teams that faced each other in Super Bowls 57 and 59 appeared to be curing some of their recent ailments in encouraging victories, suggesting their chances have suddenly increased significantly.
2. After a debacle at the end of their three-game winning streak in February, KC appears to be getting back into dynasty form with a 31-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders for their fourth win in the past five weeks. Returning to MVP form, Patrick Mahomes entered the game in the fourth quarter after passing for 286 yards and three TDs (two to WR Laci Rice), playing in a game for the first time in over a year after undergoing knee surgery 12 months ago and serving a six-game suspension to begin the season.
3. On the other hand, do you think Eagles QB Jalen Hurts can’t throw effectively? He posted a perfect passer rating (158.3 in the NFL) in Sunday’s 28-22 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, scoring all three TDs and splitting nearly all of his 326 yards to WRs AJ Brown (121 yards, 2 TDs) and DeVonta Smith (183 yards, TD).
4. Criticize the perennial powerhouses of the turbulent league of the 2020s as much as you want…realize that you may end up doing it again in the lead up to Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara, Calif., next February.
4a. If you’re interested in history, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys are currently the only teams to have met three times on Super Sunday, but they did so over 21 seasons (1975, 1978, 1995).
5. The number of touchdown passes thrown by Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford on Sunday in London set a single-game record in an International Series game. The barrage matched a career high for Stafford, who has made it four other times but was the first time he hit five with the Rams, most recently with the Detroit Lions 10 years ago.
5a. Number of players who played multiple international matches for different teams in the same season. Recently acquired Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Greg Newsome II joined the list Sunday, two weeks after playing in London for the Cleveland Browns.
6. Even if Stafford wasn’t previously in the unofficial race for 2025 league MVP, there’s no doubt he’s currently competing with Mahomes, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield, and Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott.
7. Don’t know what the “Siuuu” celebration is? (Raise your hand.) For those of you who don’t understand much about European football, and that’s us, this is what Portuguese star Ronaldo does after he scores… on the pitch… during a match… maybe in a friendly… maybe on a set piece. Anything. The Rams gave him several nods on Sunday.
8. Speaking of soccer, there appears to be synergistic growth between the Premier League’s Rams and London-based Arsenal. Both are owned by Stan Kroenke. Rams manager Sean McVay and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta have also blossomed into a club that admires each other.
9. Number of consecutive regular season games in which Rams OLB Byron Young recorded at least half a sack. No word on whether any of the quarterbacks he had in his bag took a dive to draw a yellow card. Oops, the bullet point is incorrect.
10. I would like to once again give a shout out to the Rams and their social media team, who concluded their day and a half of work in the UK with a tribute to the Beatles and the cover of their Abbey Road album.
11. Number of consecutive games in which the Browns scored 17 points or less. It ended Sunday with them dunking the drowning Miami Dolphins, 31-6.
12. Cleveland QB Dillon Gabriel may not have amazing numbers, but he certainly takes care of the ball. Fellow rookie Quinshon Judkins had a heavy attack on Sunday, recording a season-best three TD runs, his first time scoring multiple points in an NFL game.
13. Number of penalties incurred by the Jags (119 yards) in Sunday’s game against London.
14. Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence has absorbed seven sacks in each of the past two games. Prior to that, he had never been sacked more than five times in a single contest during his five-year career.
15. Jaguars rookie WR/CB Travis Hunter had his best performance of the season (8 catches, 101 yards, TD, pass defended). However, the effects are not yet felt. Hunter’s 34-yard first NFL score did little more than avoid a shutout for the Rams.
16. And that’s why the Green Bay Packers traded DE Micah Parsons, who had a career-best three sacks in Sunday’s narrow win over the Arizona Cardinals.
17. Congratulations to the Panthers on winning their third consecutive championship for the first time in four years. The question is whether QB Bryce Young, who suffered an ankle injury, will be healthy enough to play in four consecutive games.
18. QB Jaden Daniels’ hamstring injury could seriously cloud the Washington Commanders’ outlook, depending on its severity. The Washington Commanders have lost three of four games and are on the verge of dropping into the basement of the NFC East on Sunday.
19. Fortunately for their managers, the Denver Broncos honored their Super Bowl 50 champions over the weekend by inducting the late great wide receiver Demaryius Thomas into their Ring of Fame. (More on Denver later.)
20. Cowboys key Brandon Aubrey, who made a 61-yard field goal on Sunday, already has an NFL record with five attempts from 60 yards or more in his three-year career.
twenty one. Although Prescott didn’t set any records on Sunday, he continues to play very well for a team that relies heavily on him, becoming just the third player in NFL history to throw three or more touchdown passes and have a passer rating of 120.0 or higher in four consecutive games.
twenty two. Drake Maye and the first-place New England Patriots are quickly making fans forget about Tom Brady. (Just make sure those of you who read this far are still paying close attention.) But Maye broke one of the TB12 team records on Sunday, connecting on 21 of 23 passes for a team-best 91.3% completion rate.
twenty three. Maye was also part of a Patriots team that won three road games in three weeks, another first for the franchise. We already knew this year that former New England coach Bill Belichick and his eight Super Bowl rings were overrated. But Brady was also decidedly average.twenty four. The aimless Titans’ 31-13 loss must have felt good for current Pats coach Mike Vrabel, who was fired from Tennessee for philosophical reasons after the 2023 season despite his success in Nashville.
twenty five. New England has won five games this season.
25a. Tennessee has won four games since Vrabel left.
26. Kudos to another former head coach, current Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. His current charges have embarrassed the New Orleans Saints, who fired Allen midway through the 2024 campaign. The Bears had at least three takeaways in four straight games while sacking Saints QB Spencer Rattler four times.
27. And maybe the Monsters of the Midway will return under new coach Ben Johnson, who led the Bears to their first four-game winning streak in seven years.
28. Number of venues where Rams wide receiver Davante Adams found the end zone three times and scored a touchdown at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, according to OptaSTATS. Only Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (33) and Randy Moss (32) have scored in more buildings.
29. Miami coach Mike McDaniel posted regular-season wins (and losses) after Sunday’s blowout loss to the Fins in windy Cleveland…and it certainly feels like those numbers could stick around forever at any time.
30. Sure, it doesn’t help when your quarterback, in this case Tua Tagovailoa, throws three INTs in back-to-back games while bemoaning team chemistry and focus in between.
31. The Indianapolis Colts achieved a dominant victory in Los Angeles, becoming the first team this season to win six games and maintaining their lead in the AFC.
32. Of course the Colts too should Convincingly defeated Savannah Banana.
32a. From a fashion perspective, bolts are almost always appropriate. But this is no credit to the team at Air Coryell… a team that would never have committed such abhorrent acts in the first place.
33. Yes, the content of this weekly column is 32 items That happens during certain weeks in the NFL. But if the team scores 33 points in the fourth quarter, it would be the most ever for a club with a shutout in the first three periods, and the Broncos would go even further.
