Finding a new sedan is becoming difficult.

The Chevrolet Malibu, Subaru Legacy, and Volvo S90 are among the few vehicles that won’t return for the 2026 model year. Their departures come as automakers adjust their portfolios to respond to changing demands from U.S. drivers, including an increased interest in SUVs.

“The decline of sedans continues,” said Justin Fischer, media specialist at CarEdge, an online auto marketplace, even though sedans are often more affordable than larger sedans. “We’re seeing many affordable sedans being phased out, so we expect the average selling price of new cars in the U.S. to rise in 2026 for that reason alone.”

We will introduce the models whose production will end in 2025.

Audi A4

As USA TODAY previously reported, Audi’s A4 sedan has arrived.

The sedan will be replaced by the new A5 Sportback as part of Audi’s efforts to transition all internal combustion engine cars to odd-numbered model names and all even-numbered cars to electric models, spokesman Mark Dahnke said.

The new A5 Sportback went on sale in June last year, and Dahnke said a high-performance RS 5 model would also arrive “in the near future.”

Cadillac XT6, XT4

Cadillac has ended production of the XT6, a three-row SUV, at the end of 2025. According to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, the XT6’s target audience is households with annual incomes of $200,000 or more.

Production of gasoline-powered SUVs at parent company General Motors’ Spring Hill Assembly Plant in Tennessee will be replaced by a new all-electric SUV, Vistik, according to the Free Press.

As for the XT4, production of the small SUV at GM’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas ended in January 2025.

BMW XM base

BMW will discontinue half of its XM portfolio. In June, the company announced that it would only offer one XM SUV model with the “XM label” and that the base XM design would be discontinued with the 2026 model year.

The XM Label is the most powerful road vehicle manufactured by BMW M, a BMW subsidiary focused on high-performance cars, with a total system output of 738 horsepower. By comparison, the XM base delivers up to 644 horsepower.

chevrolet malibu

General Motors will end production of the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan at the end of 2024, making 2025 the last model year for the nameplate.

The production halt comes as GM uses the Fairfax Assembly Plant to produce the electric Chevrolet Bolt and gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox. The company announced in June that the plant is scheduled to begin construction of the Bolt by the end of 2025 and the Equinox in mid-2027.

Infiniti QX50, QX55

According to spokeswoman Ashli Bobo, the QX50 compact luxury SUV and QX55 luxury crossover coupe will no longer be sold in the Americas after the 2025 model year.

Bobo noted that the brand offers a “refreshed” luxury crossover SUV, the QX60, and introduced another luxury SUV, the QX80 Sport. Infiniti is also focusing on two new nameplates: the QX65 crossover coupe and the Vision QXe electric SUV.

Lexus LC Hybrid Coupe, RC, RC F

Lexus announced in January 2025 that it would say goodbye to its RC and RC F sports cars after the 2025 model year. The decision was made after 10 years on the market and more than 90,000 units sold, according to a news release.

Lexus will also bring the LC Hybrid Coupe to the U.S. market for the 2026 model year. According to parent company Toyota’s June 2025 sales report, 790 LC hybrids were sold in the first half of 2025, compared to only 7 gas LCs.

Mercedes-Benz EQB

The EQB, an all-electric compact SUV, will not be sold in the U.S. or Canada after the 2025 model year. The company remains “fully committed to electrification,” said spokesman Andrew Brudnicki, noting that the new all-electric CLA sedan is scheduled to arrive at U.S. dealerships late last year.

Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman

Porsche previously confirmed that the two 718 sports cars will end production in 2025. Production of the Macan, a compact SUV equipped with a gasoline engine, is scheduled to end in 2026.

subaru legacy

According to a Subaru news release, production of the Subaru Legacy ended last spring. The company has sold more than 1.3 million units in the U.S. over six generations since the sedan’s debut in 1989.

Subaru said in an April statement that the production end “reflects the market’s transition from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers, and Subaru’s transition to electric and fully electric vehicles.” The company previously announced plans to produce eight types of electric vehicles by 2028.

Volvo S60, S90, EC40

Sales of the mid-sized luxury sedan “S60” and the large-sized luxury sedan “S90” will be discontinued in the United States at the end of the 2025 model year.

Volvo spokesman Thomas Schulz said the Volvo brand is discontinuing the model as it continues to evaluate its portfolio “in line with customer needs and sales demands,” noting the sedan market is in decline. Schulz said tariffs also played a role in the decision to end sales of the S90 in the United States.

Volvo will end the five-year production run of the S60 at its South Carolina plant in 2024 and focus on production of the EX90 electric SUV and the XC60 SUV.

Schulz said the company has also stopped importing the EC40 electric SUV.
