“Cheers” actor George Wendt passed away at the age of 76.
George Went has won the nominations for six consecutive best-supporting actor Emmy, who will play Norm Peterson in NBC’s “Cheers.”
In the wake of George Went’s death, his “Cheers” co-stars pay tribute to his colleagues who played the Barregular Norm for all 11 seasons of the show.
“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of my friend George Went. For 11 years with “Cheers,” we have shared the stage, lots of laughter and front row seats in one of the most beloved friendships on TV.”
“George brought Norm to life with a subtle glow. “He was a true craftsman – humble, cheerful, heart-filled. What you saw on screen was someone he was off-screen with perfect comedy timing and deep loyalty to the person he loved.
“I miss the quiet moments of our conversation and the most meaningful friendship. My thoughts are with his wife, Bernadette, their children, and everyone who loved him.”
A Went spokesperson confirmed on May 20 that the 76-year-old actor had died “in peace” early in the morning.
Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer tribute: “It’s been a long time to get used to this.”
Bar owner Sam Malone, aka Ted Danson, said in a statement to USA Today that he was “devastated to hear that Georgie isn’t with us anymore.”
“I send all my love to Bernadette and my children,” Danson continued. “It’s going to take a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.”
Kelsey Grammer, also known as Dr. Frasier Crane, has issued a brief statement about Went’s death.
“I think mourning is a private matter, but I really liked George. He was loved by millions of people,” Glamour said.
Rhea Perlman: “I miss him more than words say it.”
While portraying waitress Cara Torteri, Rhea Perman shared fond memories of her onset dynamics with Went.
“George Went was the sweetest and most kind man I’ve ever met. It was impossible not to like him,” she said in a statement to USA Today. “As Carla, I often stood next to him. Norm was always in the same seat at the edge of the bar, so I managed to grab him and beat the crap at least once a week.
She added, “What a man! I miss him more than words can say.”
