Chapel Lawn pays tribute to Brigitte Bardot.

The French actress, who passed away on December 28 at the age of 91, was mentioned in Rohan’s 2023 song “Red Wine Supernova.” “She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot,” Lorne sings at the beginning. “She taught me things I didn’t know.”

Shortly after news of Bardot’s death was announced, Rohan took to Instagram to pay tribute to the “and God created woman” icon, writing, “Rest in peace, Bardot. She was the inspiration for my Red Wine Supernova.”

The post received immediate backlash from the pop star’s fans, who pointed out Bardot’s documented history of racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks. “Oh my god, I had no idea about the outrageous things that Bardot was representing,” Roan wrote on Instagram on Dec. 29. “Obviously I can’t tolerate this. I’m so sorry to know.”

In her 2003 book, The Silent Cry, Bardot criticized immigration and what she called the “Islamization of France.” The actress has publicly referred to gay people as “venue freaks” and once called the #MeToo movement “hypocritical and ridiculous and not funny.”

She has been outspoken about her political views and support for far-right politicians, openly supporting right-wing candidates such as Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Assembly party. In addition, Bardot also made inflammatory statements against Muslims and was convicted five times by the French government for inciting racial hatred.

In contrast, Roan has fiercely championed LGBTQ+ and feminist causes throughout her career, calling for a livable wage and health insurance for musicians in her Grammy Awards speech.

Despite her far-right leanings, Bardot was on record as anti-President Donald Trump. In 2017, the animal rights activist slammed the Trump administration for approving the import of Zimbabwean elephant hunting trophies.

“No tyrant in the world can be held responsible for the extinction of ancient species that are part of humanity’s world heritage,” Bardot said in a letter to Trump released through his foundation. This is a “cruel decision supported by Zimbabwe’s insane dictator and confirms the sick and deadly power you claim over the entire flora and fauna world. Your shameful actions confirm the rumors that you are unfit for public office.”
