On Thursday, June 19th, Americans celebrated the federal holiday to commemorate the day the last group of enslaved African Americans was informed of freedom.

This day, known as June, reflects on the moment when the promise of freedom first enshrined in the Declaration of Independence became a reality for more citizens.

In 2021, then president Joe Biden Signed the National Independence Day Act in June. It has officially been named a Holiday, which has been celebrated for a long time by black people and has since been celebrated with dances, parades, ceremonies and historical reenactments.

Holiday indicates the date of 1865. More than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Declaration, Major General Gordongranger and 2,000 Union troops came to Galveston Bay, Texas, to declare the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved blacks in the state.

This year’s celebrations were held nationwide, and history lessons remained important as ever.

June in Illinois

The city of Peoria in central Illinois celebrated the day with parades, poetry and picnics. The area festival also featured food, music performances, and bake-offs.

More than 1,000 miles northeast of Warchester, Massachusetts, YWCA hosts a June celebration, flag-raised ceremony and vows to live on tradition and history, reported Worcester Telegram & Gazette, part of the USA Today Network.

“We’re not here to celebrate,” said Sha-Asia Medina, a volunteer with the Black Heritage Committee in the area. “This is something that we recognize and respect our ancestors, but our attacks on history and culture continue. This June is especially important given the time we are in.”

There are other photos of Americans celebrating relatively new holidays in the United States in cities such as Atlanta, New York and Savannah.
