California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that his state will hold a special election on November 4th, asking voters to approve the mid-term Ladydick plan.

Newsom made the announcement after criticising President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans for their intention to redraw the map of the state’s Congress in order to create a more Republican-leaning Congressional district ahead of the 2026 election. Florida and Ohio are also underway to rezone efforts, which could benefit Republicans. Indiana and Missouri are also Republican-controlled states that discuss rezoning.

Overall, these efforts could win more than nine Republicans to strengthen their home 219-212 majority ahead of the Democratic election as Trump’s approval rating.

California has an independent constituency committee designed to limit partisan influence on the map drawing process, but Newsom said that it could return to the committee to pull out the map ahead of 2032, as it can approve measures to derive new processes that will be implemented for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 House elections.

“We affirm our commitment to national independent constituencies after the 2030 census, but we are asking voters to make their consensus and medium term changes,” Newsmu said. He didn’t say how many seats were trying to defy the democratic trends from Republican trends.

He called on Congress to pass a national law that would create a National Constituency Commission to effectively end gerrymandering nationwide, and denounced Republicans in Congress for not supporting such proposals in the past.

Christian Martinez, the regional spokesman for the Republican Congress’ campaign division, criticized Newsom’s announcement on social media as “stunts” that “has nothing to do with Californians,” and has nothing to do with the integration of radical Democrat power.”

A longtime Democratic base, California is the most populous state in the union and the only state with more seats in Congress than Texas.

“I know they’re going to say, ‘Don’t ruin Texas,'” Newsom said. “Well, don’t ruin the Great Golden State.”
