Mothers claim that false bullying in DMP leads to child suicide

Local reports say his Northern California father is accused of shooting him in a car occupied by three teenage boys who were throwing eggs and anointing his home.
The alleged incident occurred in San Mateo, California on the morning of May 25th, authorities said. According to the San Mateo Police Department, officials investigated “fires on occupied vehicles due to suspected bullying and harassment.”
“In the end, the person was arrested for multiple violations,” the San Mateo Police Department said in a statement on May 28th.
Craig Stephen Miseli, 54, was charged with three counts of assault with firearms with additional firearm strengthening, one count of shootings in an occupied vehicle, one count of illegal assault weapons and one count of possession of assault weapons, online court records show. He pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arrest on May 27th.
Prosecutors accused Miceli of firing May 25th in an SUV carrying three boys, ages 16 and 17, Mercury News and Kron-TV reported. Miseli told officers that the teenage pranks made him angry and her daughter was a victim of bullying in high school, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Miceli was ordered not to contact the three teenagers, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 9, according to online court records. After his arrest, Mikeli remained in custody on $25,000 bail, but records show he posted bail on May 29th.
The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a May 29 request for comment on USA Today. The San Mateo Police Department declined to comment further on the case, suing the treatment of the district attorney’s office.
San Mateo is a wealthy city in Northern California and is part of the metropolitan area of the San Francisco Gulf region. The city is about 20 miles south of San Francisco.
Report: Teens were targeting classmates for mischief
The three boys drove around San Mateo last weekend, “Trapping Classmates Pranks from Hillsdale High School,” the District Attorney’s Office told Mercury News and Cron TV. In one instance, the prosecutor said the teenager traveled to Miseli’s house on May 23 and spread the oil on his porch.
According to Mercury News and Kron-TV, the boys returned shortly after midnight on May 25th and threw eggs into the residence. When the teenager left his home, Miseli fired two shots in the car with a handgun, prosecutors alleged.
Mercury News and Kron-TV saw one of the bullets attack the passenger side of the vehicle, hitting the quarter panel. The corresponding officer stopped the vehicle and Micheli told police “his daughter was a victim of constant bullying in high school and had to spend time cleaning the oil from the pouch.”
Miceli also told officials he was trying to shoot the vehicle’s tires and throw the handgun into a local pond, according to Mercury News and Kron-TV. Police later served as a search warrant at Miseli’s home, finding illegal automatic rifles and various ammunition.
“It’s a crime reaction. You can’t take out a firearm and point it to a human and a car with a fire,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaff said in an interview with ABC7 News.
Police urged people experiencing bullying to contact authorities “providing all the resources available to prevent another potentially tragic event from occurring.”
Latest incidents involving mischief being wrong
The San Mateo shooting is the latest incident in the US where mischief has become violent and in some cases fatal.
A Virginia teenager was allegedly shot and killed by a homeowner earlier this month while filming video of Tiktok’s pranks with a friend, according to a search warrant obtained by authorities and USA Today. A teenage friend told authorities he was recording a video of him playing a “Ding Dong Ditch” prank when he was shot on May 3rd.
The homeowner was identified as Tyler Chase Butler, 27, who was arrested May 6th and charged with several crimes, including second-degree murder.
In May 2024, an 18-year-old was shot dead in the back, paralyzed after participating in the “senior assassin” prank trends in Kansas. The teen was shot, arrested, and charged with attempted murder by another teenager’s father.
A former Delaware State Police officer was accused of “brutally beating” the trooper and trooper in August 2023 of “brutally beating” the 15-year-old who played the “Ding Dong Ditch” prank, authorities said. Dempsey R. Walters was sentenced to one year in October 2024, reported the Delaware News Journal, part of the USA Today Network.
Then in July 2023, a Southern California man was sentenced to life in prison when he rammed into a vehicle carrying a group of teenagers who had pranked him with a doorbell in 2020.
