LONDON – The UK suspended free trade talks with Israel on Tuesday, summoning its ambassador and announced further sanctions on Jordanian Riverside settlers after Kiel’s Prime Minister said he was terrified by Gaza’s military escalation.
Israeli forces announced the launch of a new operation last week, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying Israel will control the entire Gaza.
Since the beginning of March, Israel has blocked medical, food and fuel supplies invasions in Gaza, with international experts warning of looming hunger.
Foreign Minister David Lamy said the attack was not a way to bring the remaining hostages into the house, calling for Israel to end the aid lockdown and denounced what some sections of the Israeli government called “extremism.”
“We cannot stand up to this new degradation, which is incompatible with the principles that underpin our bilateral relations,” Ramy told lawmakers.
“Frankly, it’s a humiliation for the values of the British people. So today I am announcing that I have suspended negotiations on this new free trade agreement with the Israeli government.”
The UK on Monday in a joint statement with France and Canada denounced Israel’s expansion of military operations in Gaza and called for the lifting of aid restrictions.
The trio said they would take “more concrete actions” if the fresh Israeli attacks don’t stop.
“Today, we want to record the horrifying escalation from Israel,” the star told Congress on Tuesday.
“We will repeatedly demand a ceasefire as the only way to free hostages, repeat opposition to settlements on the West Bank, and reiterate our demands for a significant expansion of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.”
The UK has also approved many individuals and groups on the West Bank whom it said was linked to violence against Palestinians.
The move comes after Britain imposed sanctions on many settlers and settler organizations in 2024, targeting individuals and groups who said they sponsored violence against the Palestinian community in the West Bank.
Most countries view Jewish settlements built on land occupied by the 1967 Middle East War as illegal, and their expansion has been one of the most controversial issues among Israel, the Palestinians and the international community for decades.
“We are once again demonstrating that we will continue to act against those who are committing the violent abuse of human rights,” Rammy said.
Israel’s ground and air force destroyed Gaza, expelling almost all 2.3 million residents and killing more than 53,000 people, according to Gaza Health Authorities.
Netanyahu said his country was engaged in a “civilisation war over wild barrage,” and vowed to “continue to protect itself by mere means until it is complete victory.”
