Pharmaceutical company Bayer has agreed to pay $4.85 million to settle a class action lawsuit after some of its antifungal sprays were recalled.
Bayer first recalled its Lotrimin AF and Tinactin antifungal spray products in October 2021 after they were found to contain undeclared ingredients. The affected products included treatments for athlete’s foot and ringworm and contained benzene, a chemical commonly found in detergents, drugs, dyes and pesticides.
According to the 2021 FDA recall notice, benzene is not present in the recalled products and may pose a health hazard in certain amounts. However, Bayer noted in its recall that the levels of benzene in the spray were not expected to pose a health risk. No side effects have been reported.
The company later agreed to pay millions of dollars in a class action lawsuit. Here’s what you need to know about claiming a portion of your purchase price if you purchased a Bayer product in 2015 or later.
Which Bayer sprays have been recalled?
On October 1, 2021, Bayer initiated a recall of all unexpired Lotrimin AF and Tinactin spray products sold from September 2018 to September 2021 with lot numbers starting with TN, CV, or NAA. The FDA has since ended the recall. This means that the recall is no longer in effect and the offending product has been removed from circulation.
The list of recalled products includes:
- Lotrimin Antifungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
- Lotrimin Antifungal Snoring Itch (AFJI) Athlete’s Foot Powder Spray
- Lotrimin Antifungal (AF) Athlete’s Foot Deodorant Powder Spray
