Denmark has summoned top American diplomats in Copenhagen following reports in Danish media claiming American citizens are running secret influence operations in Greenland aimed at hampering the island’s political status.
An August 27 report from the Danish state broadcaster Dr. Dr. Danish Intelligence Reports revealed a network of at least three people working on “influenced operations” in Greenland, driving a wedge between Denmark and its territory.
“An attempt to interfere in the Kingdom’s internal affairs would clearly be unacceptable,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rocke Rasmussen said after convening Copenhagen’s US accusation, Mark Straw, to explain the report. Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen said alleged interference was “unacceptable.”
The United States currently does not have an ambassador in Denmark. The charge is a diplomat who serves as the mission chief for the embassy in the absence of the ambassador.
Trump pledges to “get Greenland” when direct flights begin from us
Direct flights from the US have begun as Trump vows to “acquire Greenland.” What kind of reception do Americans get?
There was no immediate response to development from the White House. The US Consulate in the Greenland capital of Nuuk introduced all questions to the US State Department but did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Greenland government did not respond to a request for comment.
In a statement to USA Today, the top Danish diplomat said, “It was therefore not surprising to experience attempts to influence the future of the kingdom,” considering “foreign actors continue to show interest in Greenland.”
According to the DR report, all three Americans claimed “bond” with Trump. It is said that an American has visited Greenland, attended a conference and compiled a list of potential allies and opponents of Trump’s desire to take over territory.
The other two Americans are said to have been involved in building contact networks with politicians, business figures and community leaders in pursuit of Trump’s plans. The doctor said he knew the names of three American men involved in the alleged spy operation, but chose not to publish them to protect the sources. The doctor said he couldn’t tell if Americans were working on their initiative or if they were working as a result of the order.
The Wall Street Journal separately reported that the US had bolstered intelligence news activities in May to spy on Greenland. The report also urged Rasmussen to summon US envoys.
Trump’s White House has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland due to its strategic location in the waters of the Arctic and its undeveloped mineral resources and wealth, including the so-called rare earths used in many household appliances. Officials from Greenland and Danish have repeatedly said that Greenland is not on sale.
