“Weekend Update” co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che have brought back the “Saturday Night Live” joke exchange with a twist.
Bowen Yang leaves ‘SNL’ after 6 years
Bowen Yang is bidding farewell to “Saturday Night Live” after joining the show in 2018 and rising from writer to outstanding cast member.
Colin Jost and Michael Che continue one of the most beloved and shocking “SNL” traditions.
For the final episode of “Saturday Night Live” in 2025, the “Weekend Update” anchor brought back his fan-favorite joke-swapping segment. In this recurring segment, comedians tell each other jokes that the other person probably hasn’t seen before, and it’s usually something offensive that you wouldn’t want to say on TV.
But this time there was a twist. Che was the only one who wrote the jokes. When Chee introduced and explained the segment, Jost expressed surprise.
“That’s interesting, because you specifically said you weren’t going to do it this year,” he said, pointing out, “I didn’t write the joke for you.”
It’s unclear whether this was just part of the nitpick or whether Mr. Jost was legitimately surprised. However, this premise set up a segment in which only Jost was forced to read inappropriate jokes. The first was an offensive joke about slavery, and the second was about sexual abuse in the church. Finally, there was a joke about Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson.
As Johansson’s photo was shown, Jost read: “New research shows millions of women are quitting their jobs due to menopause. That means I only have a few more years left on my gravy train.” “My daughter is already saying, ‘Colin, it’s warm. Colin, you’re sweating.'” By the way, you’re feeling hot flashes! ”
“But don’t worry about me, I have backup,” Jost said, showing a photo of 23-year-old “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega. “Wednesday is not without reason called hump day.”
Jost and Che have maintained a tradition of exchanging jokes over the years, typically reviving them every Christmas episode and season finale.
The joke exchange in last year’s Christmas episode devolved into a particularly jaw-dropping scene after Che made Jost read a raunchy joke about Johansson. However, Johansson was actually in the building for the taping at the time, and the episode showed her being shocked by the punchline.
Jost got his revenge the following May in a joke exchange on the season 50 finale. During this segment, Jost had Che read out an apology to Johansson, who then joined him at the “Weekend Update” desk.
Choi apologized to Johansson, saying, “I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize to the people I hurt.”
“Actually, I only lashed out because I was jealous,” Choi wrote. “I’ve never even seen a human vagina. And notice I say human, because I once spent a summer on a farm.”
