Andrew Cuomo against Zohran Mamdanni

New York City Democrats will head to the poll on June 24th to vote in a citywide election that will determine the mayor’s party’s candidate.

play

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stands on the cliff of an astounding political comeback, but second term council members are in the way.

New York City Democrats head to the June 24 poll to vote in citywide elections that will determine party candidates – and win in November in every office, from the mayor to the county court judge.

The mayoral race presents a tough contrast to the two key candidates. Cuomo, 67, is the oldest, oldest and oldest, 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani.

Each represents the polar opposite of the ideological ideology of 11 potential fields, and Cuomo, a centralist who has appointed many Republicans to the governorate, appoints America to the right and left the democratic socialists of his member Mamdani.

Cuomo has pledged to hire more police and increase private housing construction, but Mamdani has excited Progressive with her promise to freeze rent in a regulated apartment and free buses.

The fight between them two and other local officials has cut down city housing costs, eliminated homeless people from the streets and the subways, and extracted big spending from billionaires in place of Cuomo. Super PAC Backing Cuomo spent $24 million. Many of them grew up from Trump mega donors such as hedge fund manager Bill Ackman and real estate executive Stephen Ross ($200,000). Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked $5 million.

The victory thwarts the surprising return of Cuomo, the third term governor who resigned in 2021. He denies it in condemning scandals that include covering many allegations of nursing home deaths and sexual harassment.

Cuomo recently returned to New York City for the first time in 30 years, began a run for the mayor and rushed straight away. Many elected officials who denounced him in 2021 supported him for the mayor this year.

However, while he led in the polls during the race, Cuomo’s lead gradually declined. Emerson College Polling/PIX11/A Hill investigation released on June 23rd showed that Mamdani edged him in the final round of instant spills and used the city’s rank selection voting system to determine the winner. The betting market, which previously showed that Cuomo was a much more likely to win, is now almost tied to the eve of the election.

One of the most lacking in the vote is Mayor Eric Adams, who was dropped from the primary to run as an independent general election. Adams has slacked approvals since the criminal charges against federal corruption charges in 2024. He then became increasingly in line with Trump, and the Justice Department dropped the charges.

Ranked selections in busy areas

Cuomo continued to lead Mamdani with the No. 1 voter, but the New York City primary now uses a system of ranked voting where voters rank five candidates.

And they have a plethora to choose from. New York City Director Brad Lander votes third, and he and Mamdani are crossed with each other, encouraging supporters to rank other candidates in second place. He later retired Lander’s plexuser Scott Stringer, city council president Adrian Adams (who has no ties with the mayor), Sen. Zellner Miley, former council member Michael Blake, and hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson.

With the exception of Tilson, candidates are generally leaning left, and their supporters may be more likely to rank Mamdani than Cuomo would vote for. It is the dynamics that led to Mamdani passing Cuomo in an instantaneous leak in the latest polls.

“In this ranked selection environment, we feel there is a scenario where Cuomo is beaten,” Basil Smikle, a political consultant based in New York City, told USA Today in early June.

Extreme heat waves can harm turnout

New York City is in the midst of a serious heat wave, with temperatures well above 90 degrees, and the city’s stifling summer humidity. June 24th is expected to be particularly burnt, breaking the rarely infringed 100 degree mark.

Traditional wisdom poses a threat to Cuomo as his supporters are older and likely to leave due to temperature. The former governor complained on June 19 that the election commission’s plans to reduce the heat were inadequate and that they had requested air conditioning at the polling station. Cuomo supporters are also likely to vote on Election Day, and Mamdani tends to be young, highly educated, enthusiastic and enthusiastic – is better expressed among those who took advantage of the early voting that began on June 14th.

Campaign under the shadow of Trump

Just as he does in every aspect of politics, President Donald Trump is looming heavily in his previous homeland elections. Adams’ increasingly friendly ties with Trump have driven his division with the Democratic base, with all other candidates pledging to fight the president.

With a clear, unspoken contrast with Adams, the progressive candidates tried to prove their anti-Trump authenticity about immigration. Mamdani screamed at White House immigrant Emperor Tom Homan, who made national news after Homan came to the state capitol in Albany, when Lander was recently arrested for escorting immigrants from a deportation hearing.

Cuomo insisted that his experience was perfect for dealing with Trump.

“Donald Trump will pass Mamdani like a hot knife through butter,” Cuomo said in a June 5 debate that he was dominated primarily by opponents’ attacks on his records.

AOC, Bernie Sanders, Bill Clinton Weight

Prominent figures in national politics are heavy on both sides. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a district that overlaps with Queens’ Mamdani, put him at the top of the vote. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent Vermont socialist who grew up in Brooklyn, also supports Mamdani.

But the beacons of moderate Democratic establishment like former President Bill Clinton have become heavier for Cuomo.

New York’s complex, instantaneous spills eliminate the lowest ranked candidates in each round, taking days to act. The only thing known on election night is that it won the most number one vote.
