Halloween candy takes center stage as trick-or-treaters enjoy a fun candy hunt. With a variety of options, from classic mini chocolate bars like Reese’s and Snickers to the polarizing candy corn, there’s something for everyone. Americans are expected to spend $3.9 billion on Halloween candy this year.
“Despite concerns about price increases due to tariffs, Halloween continues to resonate with consumers of all ages,” said Kathryn Cullen, vice president of industry and consumer insights at the National Retail Federation. “Whether it’s dressing up or carving pumpkins, more consumers are planning to participate in Halloween activities and traditions.Retailers are gearing up to make the shopping experience a treat for consumers this Halloween season.”
In the United States, Halloween ranks second only to Christmas in consumer spending on treats, gifts, and decorations. NRF estimates that Halloween spending this year will reach a record $13.1 billion.
Americans spend money on costumes, decorations, and Halloween-themed cards, but candy remains the top purchase for many. According to NRF research, Americans are expected to spend about $3.9 billion on candy during the upcoming Halloween season. Additionally, 96% of households plan to purchase candy for Halloween in 2025.
Candy corn, a symbol of Halloween
According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 35 million pounds of candy corn, or about 9 billion pieces, are produced each year, most of which is eaten around Halloween.
It ranks as the third-best Halloween candy after chocolate and gummy candy. Candy corn is a classic Halloween treat, but consumers are divided on the “correct” way to eat it.
Popular Halloween sweets
Many Americans are preparing for Halloween in October, and a quarter of them say they’ll buy chocolate or candy before Halloween begins. Some of the most popular sweets this season include chocolate, gummy candy, and candy corn. Additionally, 89% of people prefer sweets that come in seasonal shapes, colors, and flavors.

Candy corn was more popular in the Midwest and South, while Sour Patch Kids dominated in the Northeast. According to Instacart’s Sweet Tooth survey, the top unique candies in each state are:

If you’re looking to ditch the sugary treats and offer something different this Halloween, consider joining The Teal Pumpkin Project. The initiative promotes food-free Halloween treats for children with allergies and other medical conditions. Instead of candy, you can fill the bowl with items like psyllium, pencils, small toys, Halloween party favors, or mini jars of Play-Doh. To indicate that you have allergy-friendly treats, place a teal pumpkin or teal pumpkin sign on your doorstep.
