President Trump suggests US may start ‘attacking’ drug cartels overland in Mexico
President Trump has suggested that the United States may begin “attacking” drug cartels from land in Mexico.
The U.S. State Department issued a security alert on February 22 advising Americans living in Mexico to “shelter in place” until further notice after the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel was killed by Mexican troops.
“Due to ongoing security operations and related road closures and criminal activity, U.S. citizens in designated locations are required to shelter in place until further notice,” the State Department said in a safety alert.
The areas listed by the State Department include areas in Jalisco (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa and other municipalities), Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.
The death of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes was confirmed by the country’s Ministry of Defense in a news release. The cartel leader known as “El Mencho” was killed in a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco on the morning of February 22nd.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau called El Mencho “one of the most brutal and ruthless drug lords” in a post about X.
“This is a great development for Mexico, the United States, Latin America and the world,” he wrote.
