What you need to know about Amazon’s corporate layoffs
Amazon will lay off 14,000 employees as it invests in AI and robotic automation.
Amazon will lay off about 700 New York City-based employees as part of a company layoff of nearly 14,000 people.
The layoffs, first reported by Crain’s New York, were disclosed in a filing with the New York State Department of Labor. Amazon is laying off a total of 660 employees across nine offices in New York City.
The biggest cuts will affect Amazon’s Manhattan West office and New York Tech Hub, also based in Manhattan.
Amazon said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY on Tuesday, Nov. 11, that the job cuts are part of the company’s broader restructuring.
“All employees whose roles were eliminated (including in New York) were notified that day (October 28),” Amazon said.
Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, said in a memo to employees last month that the job cuts are aimed at making the company more efficient.
“We believe we need to have fewer hierarchies, more ownership, and organize more efficiently to act as quickly as possible for our customers and our business,” Galetti said.
Amazon also said affected employees have been given a 90-day notice period and “have access to lump-sum medical benefits, severance benefits, and free skills training.” We also provide employment support services to help you find your next job.
