nicole farato Here’s the news you need to know on Monday, from the latest on ICE operations in Minnesota to, yes, more cold weather. Plus: We also have a Super Bowl 60 bracket set.
State and federal authorities offer contrasting views on mass shootings
State and federal officials remained at odds Sunday over the shooting death of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti and the future of Minnesota’s immigration enforcement efforts.
Federal officials said Preti had a gun that he intended to use to “kill law enforcement.” Bystander video and witness testimony presented in court do not show Preeti brandishing a weapon as she approaches the agents.
Witnesses to the shooting said in new court documents that they did not see Preti brandishing a gun and that federal agents “counted the bullet wounds” without administering first aid.
The unsettling citizen video documenting the shooting could be a key point for President Donald Trump, the deployment of thousands of ICE and Border Patrol agents onto the streets of American cities, and the debate over the constitutional right to protest. The contrast could be a key moment in time, pressuring the president to change course or pay a political price, and emboldening critics in Congress to confront him.
“Your eyes don’t lie,” Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
