Grocery retail chain Aldi has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and purchased a handful of large lot locations within a year, within the year that announced plans to close hundreds of stores.
Several companies purchased leases for big lots that were closed in September 2024 after filing for bankruptcy, including tractor supplies, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and Burlington. Discount Grocer Aldi is the latest on the list and bought a few locations in three states.
Biglot sold leases to more than 460 stores to Boston-based asset liquidation company Gordon Brothers Retail Partner in late 2024, and the building was then sold. More than 200 locations have been acquired by variety wholesalers as part of a deal that began reopening in April.
The company resumed its first wave of nine locations on April 10, with a second store on May 1 and a further 70 stores on May 15. Another round will follow in June. At that point, the retailer will prepare a nationwide “grand opening” event in the fall.
The location of the big lot purchased by Aldi
According to the bankruptcy documents dated May 9, the locations of the large lots purchased by Aldi are as follows:
- 2354 S Range Ave., Denham Springs, Louisiana
- 23351 Eureka Road, Taylor, Michigan
- 4919 North St., Ste 101, Nacogdoches, Texas
Other retailers buy big lot locations
Bankruptcy records show that a few other retailers are buying large lot locations. Variety wholesalers have acquired 219 big lot stores and two distribution centers, but Rhode Island-based Ocean Statelot announced in March that it will purchase 15 big lots in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.
At the beginning of February, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet was held at Burlington Stores, Inc. said it would buy 40 Big Lot stores, while it acquired 12 Big Lots in eight states. The supply of tractors also confirmed that in early May, 18 big-lot leases were purchased in 15 states at USA Today.
