Before the arrival of rearview cameras in the US, many drivers had to turn their heads to look over the rear windows or rely on the rearview mirror to turn around. Drivers of older vehicles still rely on this technology, and the more than 1 million Ford owners affected by this recall could be forced as well (until the vehicle is repaired).
Therefore, Ford drivers operating affected vehicles may benefit from using the same technology that drivers use during licence road testing. Adding a flickering stage through the rear window during a reversal (as the driver did the pre-back-up cam) can help reduce the risk of crashes.
Ford recall expands to over 1 million vehicles due to back camera issues
Why do NHTSA’s recent recall notifications include over 1 million Ford models? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety report, “images from refrigerated or back-view cameras can reduce the view of drivers behind the vehicle and increase the risk of crashes.” A whopping 1,075,299 units could be affected by the issue, making this recall one of the biggest of 2025.

Ford corrects this issue by updating the vehicle software at an authorized dealer or by updating the airline updates for free. A letter notifying the owner of a potential safety risk is expected to be mailed by June 16th. Why is this such a serious problem for American drivers?
