If you’ve ever wanted to browse a furniture store while eating Swedish meatballs, your opportunity may be just around the corner.
Swedish furniture giant IKEA told USA TODAY it plans to open seven new stores in the United States by winter 2027. This includes six familiar large-format stores and one new small-format store from the chain.
Stores still scheduled to open in 2026 include stores in Illinois, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, New York and Florida, with another New York store and a Colorado store expected to open in early 2027, the company said in an email to USA TODAY.
IKEA currently operates more than 500 stores worldwide, including more than 50 in the United States.
Where will IKEA open new stores in 2026 and 2027?
Here are the seven cities where a new IKEA is expected to open in 2026-early 2027, along with the expected opening schedule.
- Gurnee, IL – Fall 2026
- Tulsa, Oklahoma – Fall 2026
- Madison, WI – Late Fall 2026
- New York City Soho District – Late Fall 2026 (Small store format)
- Sarasota, Florida – Winter 2026
- Buffalo, NY – Winter 2027
- Fort Collins, Colorado – Winter 2027
The exact opening dates for each store have not yet been determined.
These stores are in addition to recent openings, including a store in Chantilly, Virginia, which opened on June 18th, and a store in Rockwall, Texas, which opened on May 13th.
In March 2026, IKEA’s parent company Inka Group announced plans to open 20 small stores in Europe and North America. The company said its smaller stores are designed to be cost-effective, can open significantly faster than traditional stores and provide “convenient access in places where people already do their daily shopping.”
“The investment in new small stores is part of a three-year, €5 billion investment aimed at opening new stores and improving existing stores in most of Ingka Group’s 32 markets,” the company said in a news release.
These smaller stores, also known as plan-and-order points, differ from traditional larger IKEA stores in that customers can chat with employees and order furniture solutions that “need a little more help, such as storage systems for kitchens, bathrooms, and closets.” Many Plan and Order stores have pick-up points, allowing customers to pick up their purchases when and where it’s convenient for them.
