A majority of Americans believe that President Donald Trump is using the presidency for personal gain, as he continues to have extremely negative approval ratings during his second term, according to a new poll from The Economist and YouGov.

The poll found that 60% of Americans believe Trump is using the presidency for personal gain, including 69% of independents, 94% of Democrats, and 16% of Republicans. The findings come amid increased scrutiny of President Trump’s financial interests, including more than $1.4 billion in crypto-related income disclosed this year and acceptance of luxury jets from Qatar.

Most Americans say President Trump is using the presidency for personal gain

A poll released on July 7 found that 6 in 10 Americans believe President Trump is using the presidency for personal gain.

Views on this issue varied widely depending on party affiliation. Nearly all Democrats surveyed (94%) said Trump is using the presidency for personal gain, compared with 69% of independents and 16% of Republicans.

The survey also found that President Trump’s net approval rating was -25, one of the lowest ever recorded during either president’s term.

The poll was conducted July 3-6 among 1,603 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points, according to YouGov.

In a statement to USA TODAY, White House press secretary Davis Engle rejected suggestions that Trump’s business interests would influence his decisions as president.

“President Trump acts only in the best interests of the American people, which is why he was overwhelmingly reelected as president despite years of lies and false accusations against him and his companies,” Ingle said. “President Trump’s assets are held in a trust controlled by his children.”

Cryptocurrency profits and Qatari airliner come under scrutiny

The poll comes days after President Trump’s latest financial disclosures revealed that he earned more than $1.4 billion from crypto-related ventures in 2025.

Those profits include nearly $800 million from World Liberty Financial, a company co-founded by Trump’s sons, and about $635 million from the sale of Trump’s meme coin $TRUMP, according to Reuters.

Mr. Trump defended these gains, arguing that ordinary Americans also benefited from the investments.

“I’ve had a good career, a great career,” President Trump told reporters on July 1. “I don’t know if I would have had a better career in politics or I would have had a better career in business, but I’ve had a great career in business and I think I knew I had some money.”

Earlier this year, President Trump also received a luxury Boeing 747 from Qatar, which is currently used as Air Force One. President Trump said the plane would be transferred to the presidential library after he leaves office.

crypto and jet

Tuesday’s poll came just days after President Trump’s regular financial disclosures showed he earned more than $1.4 billion from cryptocurrencies in 2025.

Those profits include nearly $800 million from World Liberty Financial, a company co-founded by his sons, and $635 million from the sale of his $TRUMP meme coin, according to Reuters. President Trump defended the gains he has made since returning to the White House, saying ordinary Americans share in the wealth.

“I’ve had a good career, a great career,” President Trump told reporters on July 1. “I don’t know if I would have had a better career in politics or business, but I’ve had a great career in business and could have seen the money.”

Earlier this year, President Trump also received a high-end Boeing 747 from Qatar, which is currently used as the presidential jet, Air Force One. The unprecedented $400 million gift will be transferred to the Trump Presidential Library at the end of his second term, Trump said.
