New York author E. Jean Carroll asked a federal court in Manhattan on June 30 to order President Donald Trump to pay her $5 million, plus interest, when a jury found her guilty in 2023 of sexually abusing her and defaming her by calling the alleged assault “the work of a con artist.”
The request came after the Supreme Court denied President Trump’s request on June 29 to reconsider the jury’s decision in the case.
“Having lost his bid for a Supreme Court review, the defendant has continued to ‘dramble,’ delaying his defense and asserting or inventing new defenses each time his previous efforts to delay the case have failed,” Carroll’s attorneys said in a court filing.
“But this is the end,” they added.
According to Carroll’s court filing, Trump said he is considering asking for a reconsideration of the Supreme Court’s decision dismissing the appeal and is seeking to “further delay” the release of money deposited in the court’s registry for safekeeping during the appeal process.
Mr. Trump’s lawyers did not respond to requests for comment.
Carroll alleges in her lawsuit that Trump assaulted her in a department store fitting room in the 1990s and damaged her reputation in 2022 by attacking her claims as “the work of a con man.” Trump has vehemently denied her claims and is challenging the unanimous verdict of a Manhattan civil jury in 2023.
Carroll said in a June 30 court filing that the judge should withhold nearly $5.8 million from Trump at this time, including interest accrued while Trump pursues his appeal.
In a separate case, a Manhattan civil jury also awarded Carroll $83.3 million from Trump in 2024, concluding that Trump defamed her when he first denied her claims in 2019. This appeal is still pending.
