Welcome to the daily briefing. This morning’s breaking news is:
Nicole Fallato and Jane Onyanga-Omara here. We have news for Friday.
Espionage clause expires on Friday
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is set to expire on Friday after the House failed to pass an extension.
Why not? The vote was doomed from the start due to Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump’s new acting spy chief.
Why is this important? For nearly two decades, the law has allowed U.S. spy agencies to collect the communications of foreigners, including, in some cases, Americans, privacy enthusiasts say. Lawmakers say the majority of the president’s daily security briefings come from intelligence agencies authorized by this provision. Influential politicians are sounding the alarm over this blunder.

Aliens are among us…
With a star-studded cast in Disclosure Day, director Steven Spielberg offers an imaginative look at what would happen if humans learned they were not actually alone in the universe, and the efforts of some to hide that information. The film, which opens in theaters Friday, is a classic Spielberg film, considering it’s more about us than galactic beings. USA TODAY film critic Brian Truitt gave the film a rating of ★★★ 1/2 out of 4 stars.
