Vice President JD Vance and second daughter Usha Vance are expecting their fourth child
Vice President J.D. Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have announced that they are pregnant with their fourth child.
WASHINGTON – Vice President J.D. Vance said he and his wife, Usha, have not yet decided on a name for their fourth child, a boy, due in July.
“I haven’t decided on a name yet,” Vance, 41, told USA TODAY in a phone interview on the June 16 release of his new book, “Communion.”
The as-yet-unnamed child will be the first child in modern American history to be born to a sitting vice president. The couple already have three young children, Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
Vance told USA TODAY that he and his wife, Usha, 40, decided on names for all three children “very late” and didn’t decide on the names for two of the three until after the children were born.
“Usha and I have completely different views on what to name our baby, so we always discuss names when we go into the delivery room and we usually decide after seeing the baby,” Vance said. “So we don’t have a name for the baby yet. We know it’s a boy. That’s all we know. And as always, we’ll definitely have a name by the time we have to put it on the birth certificate.”
In an interview with conservative podcast host Meghan McCain last summer, Usha Vance said she didn’t want to have any more children, but didn’t rule out a fourth child. “I would never say never,” she said at the time.
She and her husband announced in January that they were expecting their fourth child.
In his forthcoming memoir, Mr. Vance suggested that his wife changed her mind about having more children after the death of her friend Charlie Kirk following the assassination of a young conservative activist last September.
“I have been asking Usha to have another baby for years and she has been telling me for years that she already has, especially now that our public engagements have brought us national attention,” he wrote. “But something changed for Usha. Shortly after burying her friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”
Excerpts from “Communion” were published in the Wall Street Journal.
Take your kids to a working day at the White House
In an interview with NBC News, Vance said he plans to take his older children to work while his wife bonds with their newborn in seclusion.
Vance told NBC that his children enjoy visiting the White House because they get to eat junk food and watch TV. Speaking to USA TODAY about the arrangement, Vance said no one in his cabinet offered to help watch his older children.
“No one has offered to babysit, but the funny thing is, no one cares if the kids are around,” he said.
Vance said he took one of his children to work a few weeks ago when his wife wasn’t feeling well. “Everyone has been so welcoming,” he said.
“When you’re vice president, the only person you really get mad at is the president,” Vance added. “So I’m going to take full advantage of that privilege in the summer when I can take my kids to the White House.”
