  • Many people may still refer to Stellantis as Chrysler, but the company’s official name has many different pronunciations.
  • Some use a soft “a” vowel in the middle. Some people use the hard “a” sound. Some, like former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, change the emphasis at the end of their words.
  • So the Free Press asked Stellantis, “How should you pronounce your name?” Even they didn’t want to solve the problem.

There are many important questions to ask about the auto industry, but there’s one minor (albeit confusing) question to ask about Stellantis. I mean, how on earth do you pronounce that name?

The company, which was first founded nearly five years ago, is the international parent company for major players in the U.S. auto industry, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, as well as several European nameplates, including Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel and Maserati.

Some people in the Motor City still call it Chrysler. Some people call it Jeep’s parent company. But when it comes to the entire company that makes the third division of the Detroit Three automakers, there’s still no consensus on that pesky vowel in the middle.

Are you a steal?-Anne-Is it Stell?Ann-? The Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, told those who might know and found some answers.

What do people call “Stellantis”?

Perhaps the most authoritative voice on the pronunciation of Stellantis is the company’s CEO, Antonio Filosa.

In interviews, speeches, and statements, Filosa has spoken of the more general “Stell-Ann-tis” pronunciation. This helps, but it complicates things because Filosa is a native Italian, speaks several languages, and leads a company from metro Detroit. The country you speak in, or where you’re from, seems to influence how you pronounce it here, but Filosa is kicking that trend.

Many Europeans use the softer “Stell”.-Anne-tis” pronunciation.

For example, the host of France 24, a French-language public news program in English, uses soft pronunciation. In the same corner, a correspondent on the scene uses a hard pronunciation.

In the United States, President Donald Trump received a hard A “Stell-AnnAccording to a review of recordings of presidents using this name, pronounced “-tis”. Former President Joe Biden also uses a more common pronunciation. Up north, Lana Payne, president of Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, also pronounces it “stel-“.Ann-is. ”

However, some other prominent car names have different pronunciations of the brand name.

Sean Fein, president of the United Auto Workers union, also uses this hard vowel. However, Fein has added his own interpretation by omitting most of the “T” sounds and saying things like “stellanis.”

Former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, the man behind the company’s 2021 vision, also uses hard vowels; 4th It is pronounced differently, emphasizing the final “I” and pronounced as “Stell-ann-“.tea. ”

After a variety of interpretations of the name came from CEOs, union leaders, company presidents, and reporters, the Free Press asked the company directly. “How do you pronounce Stellantis?”

Alas, even Stellantis cannot solve this problem.

According to Jody Tinson, director of corporate communications for Stellantis, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to names.

“If you say Stel-LAN-tis, Stel-ANN-tis, or add your own flair, we’re fine with that. As long as you’re talking about Stellantis, you’re saying it right,” she wrote.
