Federal agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on the morning of January 24, officials said.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the shooting occurred while Border Patrol agents were conducting an immigration enforcement operation. Federal officials said officers fired “defensive shots” after a man with a handgun approached them and tried to disarm him, but the man resisted.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a press conference that his department responded to a shooting involving federal law enforcement officers at 9:03 a.m. local time.
Police found a man at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, O’Hara said. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Here’s what we know so far about the man killed by federal law enforcement on Saturday.
Who was shot and killed in Minneapolis?
The Associated Press and local media in Minneapolis identified the slain man as Alex Preti.
The Associated Press reported that Preeti’s identity was confirmed by her parents, who said she was a nurse in the intensive care unit.
USA TODAY has reached out to Preeti’s family.
O’Hara said at a news conference that the man killed was a 37-year-old white man, a U.S. citizen and resident of Minneapolis.
O’Hara said the man had no criminal history, his only interaction with police was a minor traffic ticket, and he was a legal gun owner with a current firearms permit.
Where was the filming done?
City officials said the shooting occurred in the area of West 26th Street and Nicollet Street, less than three miles south of downtown Minneapolis.
This is a developing story.
