“One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” are among the films selected for top honors at the Golden Globe Awards. Who will win, and who should win?
Was ‘Wicked: For Good’ removed from Golden Globe nominations?
Golden Globe Award nominations have been announced. USA TODAY’s Ralphie Aversa looks at some of the most notable snubs, including “Wicked: For Good.”
We’re only a week into the new year and awards season, and it’s already looking pretty golden.
The Critics’ Choice Awards awarded the first major trophy to Oscar nominees just a few days ago, but the next one will take place at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on January 11th (live on CBS and Paramount+, 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). The Globes, once again hosted by Nikki Glazer, will provide a different perspective on the awards landscape. While the Critics Choice Association is mostly American, Globe voters are a more secular group. And we’ll start to see whether “One Battle After Another” (leading with nine nominations) and “The Sinners” (seven nominations) have the potential to be Oscar front-runners.
USA TODAY predicts who will win (and who won) in the top film categories.
best drama
“Frankenstein”
“Hamnet”
“It was just an accident.”
“Secret Agent”
“Emotional value”
“Sinners”
will/should win: “Sinners”
It’s an impressive lineup, half of which are international (including the excellent “It Was Just an Accident”). But “Sinners” already looks like a strong contender for the Best Picture Oscar, and will likely be the winner here. No wonder Ryan Coogler’s incredible tale of a musical gangster vampire was one of last year’s most original (and best) films, one that was embraced by audiences, critics, and Hollywood powers-that-be alike.
best comedy or musical
“Blue Moon”
“Bugonia”
“Marty Supreme”
“There is no other choice.”
“New Wave”
“One battle after another”
Win: “One battle after another”
You should win: “Marty Supreme”
Although not exactly a comedy, given its timely message and weighty themes, “One Battle” was well-received, winning Best Picture from the National Board of Review and Critics Choice. And barring a major upset, they’ll win here. But while that movie is about revolutionaries, “Marty Supreme” is actually feel They’ve made a great, unconventional sports movie starring an innovative, cocky, and obnoxious table tennis player.
Drama Leading Actor Award
Joel Edgerton “Train Dreams”
Oscar Isaac “Frankenstein”
Dwayne Johnson “The Smashing Machine”
Michael B. Jordan “Sinners”
Wagner Moura “The Secret Agent”
Jeremy Allen White “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere”
Win: Moura
You should win: Jordan
The Globe Theater respects Brazilian movie stars. Fernanda Torres won a surprise Best Actress award a year ago for “I’m Still Here,” and the rising star Moura is a strong contender in the category for her steely performance in the historical political thriller. Interestingly, like Jordan in Sinners, Moura also played multiple roles in Agents, the latter brilliantly playing twin brothers plagued by a swarm of vampires.
Drama Leading Actress Award
Jesse Buckley “Hamnet”
Jennifer Lawrence “Die My Love”
Renate Rheinwe “Sentimental Value”
Julia Roberts “After the Hunt”
Tessa Thompson “Hedda”
Eva Victor: “Sorry, baby”
will/should win: buckley
Like every year, at least one actor takes center stage during awards season and wins almost every award. (For example, Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer.”) Buckley looks to be the conqueror of this round, as he won the Critics Choice Award and is predicted to win here as well on the road to Oscar. And she is brilliant in the heartbreaking role of William Shakespeare’s wife, who overcomes the worst personal tragedy and ultimately finds emotional catharsis.
Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical
Timothée Chalamet “Marty Supreme”
George Clooney “Jay Kelly”
Leonardo DiCaprio “One Battle After Another”
Ethan Hawke “Blue Moon”
Lee By Your
Jesse Plemons “Bugonia”
will/should win: chalamet
It’s likely that either Timmy or Leo will win the Best Actor Oscar in March, and one of them will also win at the Globes. DiCaprio has won three Globes, but this is Chalamet’s year. He has never played the role of a self-absorbed bastard, a table tennis prodigy who leaves behind a path of destruction, better than in Marty. Considering the depth of his filmography to date, it’s finally time to start giving Chalamet flowers.
Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical
Rose Byrne: “If I had legs, I’d kick you.”
Cynthia Erivo “Wicked: For Good”
Kate Hudson “Son San Bleu”
Chase Infinity “One Battle After Another”
Amanda Seyfried “Ang Lee’s Testament”
Emma Stone “Bugonia”
will/should win: Burn
This category is a little more problematic than drama dispatch. Several competitors here, including Infinity, Hudson and Seyfried, are likely to join the conversation for a Best Actress Oscar nomination. But this is a glove to lose for Byrne. Her darkly funny and emotional performance as a struggling mother plagued by a series of daily disasters and misadventures is her strongest role to date in her remarkable career.
Best Supporting Actor Award
Benicio Del Toro “One Battle After Another”
Jacob Elordi “Frankenstein”
Paul Mescal “Hamnet”
Sean Penn “One Battle After Another”
Adam Sandler “Jay Kelly”
Stellan Skarsgård “Sentimental Value”
Win: Skarsgard
You should win: Eroldi
This is another category filled with outstanding works from top to bottom. It could go to either del Toro or Skarsgård, but if the two “One Battle” actors split the vote, the latter could have an advantage. That being said, Critics Choice got it right and Elordi was the best choice. The Australian actor plays the iconic creature brilliantly in Frankenstein, oozing humanity and every emotion from anger to compassion beneath the copious amounts of makeup and prosthetics.
Best Supporting Actress Award
Emily Blunt “The Smashing Machine”
Elle Fanning “Sentimental Value”
Ariana Grande “Wicked: For Good”
Inga Ebsdotter Lilias “Sentimental Value”
Amy Madigan “Weapons”
Teyana Taylor “One Battle After Another”
Win: taylor
You should win: madigan
Given the Globes’ history of praising big-name stars and her status as a well-known pop star, Grande seemed like the most obvious choice for the Globes. But given that “Wicked” wasn’t even nominated for Best Musical or Best Comedy, perhaps it doesn’t have as much support as “One Battle,” for which Taylor received more nominations. She’s great, but her role isn’t part of the transformative, extraordinarily witchy, just super cool greatness that Madigan absolutely owns.
