Protests after ICE shooting in Minneapolis
Following the ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis, protesters confronted ICE agents and shouted chants in the streets.
Protests are planned across California this weekend over the Trump administration’s actions against Venezuela and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), days after an immigration officer shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, in Minneapolis.
Part of the demonstration is called “ICE Out For Good,” and several events share the same description. Renee Nicole Good’s death is “part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse perpetrated by federal immigration enforcement against members of our community.”
The demonstrations also occurred after federal agents shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, on January 8th. The Department of Homeland Security said one of the men was affiliated with the Torren de Aragua gang, and the other was a “suspect” of the gang. This week’s shootings come amid ongoing tensions between federal immigration authorities and communities across the country.
Other demonstrations call for the removal of ICE agents from communities and an “end to the occupation of Venezuela.” On January 3, the United States detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. President Donald Trump has previously said the United States would “run” the country until a democratic transition occurs. Some of this weekend’s demonstrations appear to be specifically focused on oil companies, which are growing profits as the Trump administration turns its attention to Venezuela’s oil industry.
In Los Angeles, protesters and faith leaders gathered on January 8 to rally for good, and one participant told the USA TODAY Network that he wants a thorough investigation into what happened. That same night, a crowd had gathered in Boyle Heights for another demonstration over Goode.
Californians living in the Bay Area from Ventura County could see demonstrations on Saturday, Jan. 10, at least based on planned events known to USA TODAY Network.
