At this time of year, football fans and awards season enthusiasts are indulging in a feast, with something for everyone back home for a very merry Christmas.

It’s one of those new movies that hits your favorite service like a tackle dummy, including the Oscar frontrunner “One Battle After Another,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and “Him,” starring Marlon Wayans as the most unhinged quarterback in history. Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon’s Prime Video have movies for every taste, from Riz Ahmed’s paranoia thrillers to Tina Romero’s bizarre zombie flicks. (She’s the daughter of horror icon George Romero, so a talent for the living dead is in her genes.)

“F1: The Movie”

As an aging hired driver for a small racing team, Brad Pitt brings a lot of personality and some very brave steel to this four-wheeler. There’s plenty of macho bravado and gritty action scenes, as Pitt’s eccentric F1 veteran plays the reluctant mentor of a rising star (Damson Idris).

“Summer Griffin”

This coming-of-age comedy stars Everett Blank as Griffin, a laborious, creative kid who writes and performs plays in his basement every summer. During rehearsals for his latest film, his friends prove untrustworthy and Griffin needs a lead actor, so he scouts and develops feelings for performance artist Poolman (Owen Teague).

Brutal, weird, and with cool mythological elements, this football horror movie stars Tyrik Withers as a promising professional quarterback. He is invited to a training camp run by his idol (Marlon Wayans) to see if he can become a franchise player, and the young man embarks on a psychologically difficult and very bloody journey.

“Melv”

In this holiday rom-com, Anna (Zooey Deschanel) and Russ (Charlie Cox) are a newly separated Boston couple who share a dog, Marv. When Marv shows signs of canine depression, Russ takes Marv on a trip to a pet-friendly Florida resort, accompanied by an uninvited Anna, who helps humans and animals alike sort out their feelings.

“Next Battle”

This timely action drama from director Paul Thomas Anderson, who has the most Golden Globe nominations with nine nominations, is a must-see in the lead-up to Oscar season. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a scruffy former revolutionary desperately searching for his teenage daughter (Chase Infinity), who is hotly pursued by his nemesis (Sean Penn).

David McKenzie’s modern homage to classic paranoia thrillers stars Riz Ahmed as a secret mediator between whistleblowers seeking a settlement with a shady company. His latest client (Lily James) is a scientist who has documents that could allow him to examine an important merger in detail, and the protagonist begins to get personally close to the work.

“Roofman”

Channing Tatum’s heartwarming and hilarious performance enhances this stranger-than-fiction drama. A divorced ex-soldier (Tatum) escapes after being sentenced to 45 years in prison for a series of McDonald’s robberies, builds a secret home at a Toys R Us, and falls in love with a single mother (Kirsten Dunst) who works there.

“Spinal Tap II: The End Continues”

If you want to honor the memory of the legendary Rob Reiner, revisit the classic 1984 mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” and this sequel. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer return to play the lovably dim-witted aging Spinal Tap rockers, reuniting for a one-night-only show in a comedy starring icons such as Elton John and Paul McCartney.
