Michigan fires Sherone Moore for ‘inappropriate relationship’
Michigan announced in a statement that coach Moore was fired due to an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
Former Michigan State football coach Sherone Moore, who was fired on Dec. 10, was arrested hours after her firing.
Moore was taken into custody at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan, according to online court records. As of 10:30 p.m. ET, Moore remained in custody and no charges were listed against him.
Police in Pittsfield Township, which is located just south of Ann Arbor and where the University of Michigan is located, said in a statement that they were called to the scene at 4:10 p.m. local time “to investigate an alleged assault.” Pittsfield police said one suspect in the incident was taken into custody, but did not release the suspect’s name.
“This incident does not appear to be random in nature and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” the statement said. “The suspect is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of the charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. The investigation is ongoing at this time.”
Police responded to the incident at 4:10 p.m. ET, about 30 minutes before Michigan State announced it had fired Moore.
News of the arrest came after ESPN reported that Moore was taken into custody and turned over to Pittsfield Township Police.
Moore was fired for cause. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement that the university’s investigation found “credible evidence” that “Coach Moore had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”
Moore just completed his second season at the helm of the Wolverines after Jim Harbaugh left to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers after the 2023 national championship-winning season. Moore was an assistant on Harbaugh’s staff when he was involved in the program’s sign-stealing scandal, which resulted in Moore being suspended for three games (two in 2025 and one more in 2026).
Officials are prohibited from releasing further details, adding that further details about the incident “will be released as soon as permitted.”
