Rivian Automotive RIVN.O is recalling 34,824 electric delivery vehicles in the United States because their seat belt systems may not properly restrain drivers, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, Rivian Automotive RIVN.O said in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday.
Rivian said it is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to this issue in any market. This recall affects certain 2022-2025 EDV models.
U.S. auto regulators launched a preliminary investigation into Rivian’s 17,198 electric delivery vans in September after complaints that cables were fraying, snapping or unraveling, putting drivers at risk of becoming unrestrained in a crash or sudden stop.
Rivian said the problem occurs when drivers repeatedly sit on already-tight seat belts, damaging the pretensioner cable, a critical component designed to instantly tighten the belt in the event of a collision or sudden deceleration.
The EV manufacturer has released an over-the-air software update that can automatically detect seatbelt misuse by drivers.
In addition, Rivian will inspect the driver seat belt pretensioner assembly in eligible vehicles and replace it, if necessary, free of charge.
