President Donald Trump said he was not surprised to hear that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz may be interested in bidding for the White House in 2028.

President Trump responded to a question from reporters in the Oval Office regarding the Axios report that Cruz was laying the groundwork for a run, saying, “It’s a little early. (There’s) three years and four months left. That’s a long time.” “But he’s a very good person. He’s a very good friend of mine.”

“I’m not really surprised to hear that,” he added. Cruz was one of 16 Republicans Trump opposed in the 2016 Republican primary, before he claimed the nomination and then took the White House.

Axios reported that Cruz is “devoted to a feud with Tucker Carlson and carving out turf in global conflicts as a traditional pro-intervention Republican.” Meanwhile, Vice President J.D. Vance, widely seen as the Republican front-runner in 2028, is an ally of Mr. Carlson and supports Mr. Trump’s “America First” policy on foreign affairs and U.S. engagement.

Trump is prohibited by the constitution from seeking a third term as president, but he has repeatedly expressed a desire to serve beyond 2028, although he has acknowledged that it is legally impossible.

President Trump told reporters on board Air Force One on October 29, “I’m not allowed to run. It’s unfortunate.”

Earlier in the day, when Harris Faulkner, host of Fox News’ “The Faulkner Focus,” asked him to comment on the Axios article, Mr. Cruz shyly responded.

“Reporters are going to write headlines that will get clicks and get attention. I got the job, and it’s a job representing 31 million Texans. And I’ll tell you right now, the wins we’re getting are historic,” Cruz said, without denying the reports.

Cruz then highlighted his contributions to Trump’s signature sweeping tax and spending bill that Congress passed in July.

“That big, beautiful bill you were just talking about, I was lucky enough to write a large part of that bill,” he said.

Legal restrictions on Mr. Trump’s candidacy have not stopped some allies from pushing for a third term.

Steve Bannon, who served as White House chief strategist during Trump’s first administration and now hosts the influential MAGA podcast, told The Economist on October 23: “Trump will be president in 2028, and people should adjust to that.”
