Activists respond to Scotts’ dominant gender-affirming care ban for minors
Transgender activists are responding to new Scotus supporting Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors.
On July 9, the Department of Justice announced that it had sent more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics involved in child gender medical procedures.
The department indicated that the subpoena was part of an investigation into possible medical fraud or false statements.
The move is likely to raise fears about transgender youth receiving gender-affirming healthcare after a series of Republican-led states banned such treatment for minors. Based on the hot button issue, it will be welcome news for those who oppose care, including those who helped push President Donald Trump to the White House.
“The health professionals and organizations that have hurt children in their distorted ideological service will be accountable by this Department of Justice,” Attorney General Pam Bondy said in a statement following the announcement.
Major American healthcare institutions, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support gender maintenance care for minors.
However, some European countries have increased restrictions in recent years. This includes the National Health Service of England following a review that questioned the extent of a particular treatment.
In a decision that divided the Supreme Court along ideological boundaries, six conservative justice in June supported Tennessee’s ban on transgender minors receiving adolescent blockers and crosshormones.
