Is eating better for you than smoking weeds? New research suggests that this is not the case

A new study found links between chronic cannabis use – – Includes edible forms – – Also, the increased risk of cardiovascular disease comparable to the effects of smoking cigarettes.

The study, published May 28, is the latest in linking cannabis to negative health effects, and was conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco.

They found that vascular function was reduced by about half compared to people who did not regularly consume cannabis. They also showed signs of an increased risk of early heart disease, as well as cigarette smokers, researchers found.

What is included in the study has been tested to ensure that you don’t smoke or vape and is not frequently exposed to indirect cigarette smoke.

“This study enhances understanding of the potential vascular health risks associated with cannabis use and provides more evidence that cannabis use is not benign,” the researchers concluded.

What does the new research say about food?

The most surprising finding was that vascular function in people who chronically used THC-covered foods was reduced by more than 50% compared to non-users. Those who smoked marijuana showed an average decline of 42%.

Edibles are thought to be less harmful than smoking or vaping marijuana.

“When I first saw the results of THC, I told (another researcher) “Scientifically, this results of THC are really interesting, but the boy is ruining the message of public health.”

Increased evidence is linking cannabis to health risks

Last year, we studied daily use of marijuana (smoking, vaped or edible) daily use of marijuana (e.g., smoking, vaped, or eating) with a significantly higher risk of heart attacks and stroke.

In 2023, a study led by researchers at Stanford University found that daily use of marijuana increases the risk of coronary artery disease. However, this study did not distinguish between the risks of various types of cannabis products, such as steam and edibles.

The American Heart Association also states that cannabis is linked to negative health effects and advocates for further research to confirm its effects.

More research is needed

In an interview with CNN, Springer said the study stated that “inadequate vascular function in cannabis users and that cannabis use does not cause poor vascular function.”

Although no causal relationships have been established, the results of the study have begun to inspire the interest of other experts.

“Isn’t other forms of marijuana — tea, tincture, edible — probably as benign as we thought it would be?” Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness for Denver’s National Jewish Health, told CNN. “Big research is needed to reach a better conclusion about this finding.”
