New Jersey Governor Signature Bill makes the ban on books illegal
Gov. Phil Murphy has signed the Freedom Reading Act, which prevents the state from banning arbitrary voluntary books.
Voters in New Jersey set the fall table later this year, so they can expect to have one of the competitive governor races later this year.
Within an hour of voting ending Tuesday, the main contest was called to one of two states, Democrat Mikier Cheryl and Republican Jacques Theatarelli, along with Virginia, to hold a high-stakes governors’ contest, which could frame the 2026 medium-term elections.
Both sides were already shaking before all votes were counted, and Democrat groups were calling for a hug around President Donald Trump’s Ciattarelli, who has a personal interest in flipping through the state of the garden.
“While now and November, we make sure that voters remember why they rejected the last two statewide bids,” said Izzi Levy, a spokesman for the Democratic Governors Association.
Republicans are shining with confidence given the profits that Trump’s populists have been fueled.
“With New Jersey Republicans gathering Jack Ciatarelli, we are well positioned to help Democrats take responsibility for their poor records and work to realize the real change they have been promised.
Here are some key points from Tuesday’s election:
It’s Mikie: Legislators win in the democratic field that cried out
Most of the former Navy helicopter pilot Racecheryl took the lead over his five fellow Democrat competitors, but some, along with many undecided voters, thought Tuesday evening would be a little longer.
“It’s really a grassroots campaign and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s been part of it, whether they volunteered, were missing for a few dollars or voted,” she said in an X post when the poll ended. “We couldn’t come here without your support.”
The only woman running for governor in Garden State, Cheryl was primarily seen as a founding candidate with heavy support from county parties and other democratic parallel groups who gained years of voting experience and resources to gain weight.
She was primarily stuck to the script, presenting herself to voters as a mother and military veteran. However, she also looked at records that support women’s reproductive rights and increase affordable housing close to public transport.
The 53-year-old lawmaker, who was a member of the centralized “Blue Dog” coalition in Congress until 2023, never saw her lead decline in the vote despite denouncement of attack ads that slammed her for accepting donations from the PAC, a company belonging to SpaceX owned by Elon Musk.
Maga wins Trump’s eyes as “Blue Horror Show”
Ten years ago, Republican Jack Theatarelli was one of the outspoken conservatives who felt Trump was unsuitable for president and called him “Charratan.” When he came within 3 percent points of winning governor in 2021, he kept Trump arm-length.
But that’s behind both men now, and the president’s slow support helped push former councillors at the finish line within 30 minutes of the poll closing, as GOP hopes to flip the nation from what the president described as a “blue horror show.”
New Jersey has been a solid blue state at the presidential level for about 40 years, but it has become redder last year after Trump lost about 5% of the state. He previously lost in 2020 by about 16%.
From a governor’s contest perspective, the GOP has better luck in recent memory of Republican Chris Christie winning the 2010 and 2014 elections.
How well Ciattarelli did four years ago, and across Republican trends, New Jersey voters should expect a hotly contested – expensive – general election this fall.
Cheryl’s victory tells us about the Democrats ahead of 2026
Many of the Democratic gubernatorial primary in New Jersey have served as labs for candidates whose future party has more potential than in the middle of next year.
Each of the six candidates brought about a large and diverse resume, but they agreed to many issues, such as addressing the cost of living. They all stood out in a variety of ways, either highlighting their autumn choices or by standing up to Trump.
Newark Mayor Las Baraka is a charismatic speaker with a long history of civic service and grassroots organizations, who, for example, sparked a fire in the final weeks of the race after being detained by US immigrants and customs enforcement agents during a brawl at a federal facility in Newark.
The stance on hot button topics, such as ice raids, appears to have not moved the needle for more progressive or anti-athletic candidates, including Jersey City Mayor Steve Flop.
Cheryl was criticized for being so bland that he was criticized for being more left-leaning elements within the party, such as the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. The group argued that she “can’t be seen anywhere” during Congressional debates over Trump’s legislative agenda.
But, carrying around a third of the vote on Tuesday evening, Cheryl leaned over the issue of kitchen tables with regard to social security, and promoted herself as a person who “facing Trump and Musk” and “running towards the battle.”
But ultimately, the tally was able to highlight the remaining disparities in how the party should move forward, given that the majority of New Jersey Democrats wanted someone other than Cheryl to carry the party’s flag into the fall.
