Donuts and cookies have special days. How about some delicious, crispy, buttery croissants? Of course it should be, and soon. National Croissant Day is Friday, January 30th.

According to the National Today site, there is no information on how National Croissant Day became one of countless unofficial holidays that are days when restaurants, stores, and retailers offer specials on certain foods. Still, the day has been celebrated since 2006, according to the National Day Calendar.

Historically, the croissant is a relatively new pastry, created in 1915 when French chef Sylvain Claudius Goy replaced the brioche dough used in France’s crescent-shaped quipferre with a layered yeast dough, according to the Institute for Culinary Education. But the history of the pastry (kipferl was similar to a cookie) dates back to the 13th century, according to Smithsonian Magazine.

The pastry has become a standard breakfast treat, with 14% of 2,158 U.S. adults in a recent YouGov survey saying they regularly eat a croissant for breakfast. That’s less than English muffins (20%) and donuts (18%), but more than cinnamon rolls (13%) and Danish pastries (8%).
